STeelhead Day Trips Jan / feb 2024 - fishing Steelhead Green Gualala river
On Jan.30 and Feb.13, Ed Barich led Steelhead Day trips to the Gualala River. These days were picked to be just prior to big Pacific storms with steely-green flows less than 600cfs. Some small fish were caught, but bigger ones were seen rolling. Spey casting photos of Joe, Penelope, Dave and Ed were taken by James Kibler.
Yuba River Outing 12/16-17/2023
For our December Yuba River outing, we had 15 members including two women signed up. The fishing was slow this year. By my count, we only landed 6 trout and a steelhead with a few fish breaking off. There were very few salmon or redds in the river this year, probably an indication why the trout and steelhead were scarce. There was some bear scat and tracks around but we did not see any bears. The Yuba now has mud snails, so they continue to spread around the rivers in California. We had great camaraderie at dinners each night and Jeff had a birthday party one night even though it was not his birthday. We left late Sunday afternoon just before the rain hit.

Spey clinic at Johnson's beach guerneville 12/9/2023
We had 12 people show up at the River Inn Grill for breakfast and then on to Johnson's Beach to wader up and do some casting. The river was running about 350 cfs and the mouth at Jenner (previously plugged up for a few days) had opened itself the prior afternoon. We had a brief discussion and demonstration and then off to casting. This time we were able to use flies rather than yarn. Jeff noted that there were several fish coming through the weir downstream of us and we all got to casting hoping they would grab a fly. Penelope did get a couple of grabs (she says??? - just kidding). It was a good day. No one hooked themselves! Later in the day, Kings reported that there were steelhead and silvers caught down river that day. Mike, Jeff, Ed, Rosa, Andy, Penelope, Dave, Malcolm, Doug, Don, Mike & Camilo, Jan

Oct 12-15, 2023 Lewiston reservoir Outing
This was the 8th annual RRFF outing to Lewiston Reservoir. Ed Barich organized the event and 15 members attended. The weather was 10 degrees cooler than last year, slowing the action for the lake's rainbow trout. Most of the members stayed in cabins at Lakeview Terrace Resort, where we all shared group dinners on Friday and Saturday nights. Several of us fished the nearby Trinity River and caught steelhead.
Oct 10, 2023 Women's Wading Safety clinic
This was a first clinic of this type when we had a half day clinic on the Russian River at Del Rio Regional Park with Women's group members Catherine, Angela, Maria, Rosa, Shawna, Pam, Jody and Linnette (and husband Glenn). Mike, Jeff and Gregg were instructors. Catherine was an active participant with us in putting this together. We covered safe wading topics along with equipment orientation, turning over rocks to find aquatic insect creatures and fishing techniques. It was a beautiful warm day on the river to get into the water and practice followed by lunch at Healdsburger and a short visit to the mouth of Dry Creek. Participants were presented with a wading safety card and a whistle.

Sept 27-Oct 1, 2023 Webber lake outing
This was our second outing to Webber Lake. Dan Powers organized, ~16 hardy campers attended. Some days had a lot of wind, we had a little rain, a little snow one night, 30 degree mornings. We also had the opportunity to check out fishing at Milton Reservoir, the Little Truckee and Yuba Middle Fork. Fishing was not quite as good as last year but fish were caught - Lahontan Cutthroat, Rainbows, Brookies and Browns. All fishing from float tubes and pontoon boats. Great meals Friday and Saturday night and and great camaraderie!
